Vietnam, Kanagawa prefecture extend economic ties

Governor of the Japanese prefecture of Kanagawa Yuji Kuroiwa has expressed hope for closer co-operation with Vietnam, especially in economics.
As the second largest prefecture in Japan, Kanagawa is designated as a national special zone with many small- and medium-sized firms keen to invest in Vietnam, Kuroiwa told head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Economic Affairs Vuong Dinh Hue in Hanoi on July 25.

He added that the prefecture wants to build an industrial park in Vietnam.

The governor also informed his host that the Kanagawa prefecture has signed a memorandum of understanding with the central city of Da Nang on personnel exchange between the Da Nang Cancer Hospital and Kanagawa Cancer Centre.

The Vietnamese Party official welcomed the proposals of Kanagawa prefecture and expressed hope that the prefecture would encourage investment in Vietnam’s education, health care and public services sectors.

He suggested that Japan should allow more Vietnamese engineers to work in the country, which would help ease Japan’s workforce shortage while increasing the quality of Vietnamese human resources.

Hue said his commission intends to study Japan’s experience in institutional and economic restructuring in order to work out suitable options for Vietnam in this field towards the aim of further improving business and investment climate and competitiveness.

The same day, a Vietnam-Kanagawa investment forum was held in Hanoi the same day, which resulted in the signing of an MoU on co-operation between Kanagawa Prefecture and the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

Governor Kuroiwa said Kanagawa is home to firms active in electronics, mechanical engineering, media and biotechnology, and that some 40 Kanagawa-based businesses have invested in Vietnam so far.

Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Van Trung promised all possible support for Kanagawa enterprises—especially those operating in health care, education and vocational training.
